Learn about Light Standard candles.

  • Hi, I’m Julie and I’m the main candle-pourer at Light Standard.

I started making candles in my kitchen as a hobby, a way to stay busy while navigating life in a new city. It was so satisfying to create something tangible. As I began to actually burn my inventory, that satisfaction grew and the impact of the warm light and the carefully curated scents was evident. Room with a candle or two > room without a candle.

I started sharing my candles with friends and family — and it turns out you like them, too! I’m happy to now be offering these hand-made candles more broadly.

I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Light Standard candles are made with premium quality Canadian-sourced coconut wax and fragrances. They are hand-poured with care and in small batches in Barrie, Ontario.

  • As the main candle-pourer at Light Standard, I believe in creating candles that are as clean and sustainable as they are enjoyable. That’s why I use coconut wax as the foundation of my hand-poured, small batch candles.

Coconut wax is derived from the oil of coconuts, making it a renewable, eco-friendly resource. It burns cleaner and longer than many other waxes, producing less soot and releasing fewer toxins into your space. Its low melting point also ensures a more even burn so you can enjoy the scent and glow of your candle to the very last drop.

Light Standard’s 8 ounce candles will burn for about 40 hours. The 4 ounce testers will burn for about 20 hours.

  • To get the most out of your Light Standard candles, a little care goes a long way. Here are a few simple tips to keep your candle burning:

    • Trim the wick. Before each burn, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. This helps prevent excessive smoke, ensures a clean burn and keeps your candle burning longer.

    • Let it pool. Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the container on the first burn. This prevents tunnelling and helps ensure an even burn for the life of your candle.

    • Burn wisely. Don’t burn your candle for more than three or four hours at a time (for a standard 8 oz candle.) This helps preserve the scent, extends the life of your candle and keeps things safe.

    • Stay safe. Always burn your candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts. Never keep a burning candle unattended. Extinguish completely before moving.

  • Q: Do hand-poured candles burn differently than mass-produced candles?

A: Yes! Hand-poured candles often burn cleaner and more evenly than mass-produced candles. This is because I carefully measure each ingredient and test every batch to ensure only the best candles end up in your home. Sometimes you may notice a few quirks, like minor air bubbles or slight cracks. This is normal and a natural side effect of the home-made process.
